When are practices held?
Practices begin August 1st We typically practice 6:00-8:00pm M-T-W-R during August and three day/week once school starts. Flag teams will start August 13th. They typically practice 6:00-7:30 two-three days/week. Schedules will be set by coaches. We understand about vacations and other family functions in August. The player will not be penalized for missing some practices. We do ask that you coordinate with the Head Coach as a courtesy.
When are the games?
Our home games are played on Friday nights and Saturdays. Away games are typically Saturday with Friday night or some Sunday games a possibility.
Where are the practices/games held?
HYF&C is a travel football program. Practices and home games are played on the turf field and the grass fields at the Haverford Reserve, located between Darby and Darby Creek/Marple Roads. Away games are played at the home fields of the other Bert Bell Memorial Football Conference member teams. Click on the Bert Bell link to the left to view teams in the Conference. Flag football teams are intramural and will play one away game per season.
Do players have to "try out" and are there "cuts"?
HYF players do not have to "try out" and there are no "cuts." Players are evaluated during the August practices and assigned a team. We typically have "Varsity" and "Junior Varsity" teams at each weight class. The players are assigned to a team based on skill level and appropriate age/weight. Flag teams are assigned by school and convenience to the best of our ability.
How much does it cost to play?
Registration fee for 2018 will be $175 for contact football and $90 for flag football. The registration fee covers the use of HYF football equipment and all associated game fees.
A late fee of $25 applies to anyone registering after August 12th, 2018.
What equipment do I have to buy?
For pad football, your registration fee covers use of a Helmet, Shoulder Pads, Game Jersey, Practice Jersey, Game pants, belt, knee/thigh pads and a mouthguard. You need to buy cleats, athletic supporter(girdle) and a cup/hip pads, and socks. A refundable deposit of $200 check - post dated to November 1st will be required at equipment handout. Deposit checks will not be cashed, simply returned or destroyed once the equipment is returned. Handout date is July 31st If you are unable to attend the equipment handout date, your child will be issued his equipment as availability/time permits. HOWEVER, your child will not be permitted to participate in practice without proper equipment.
Why/when is a Birth Certificate required?
For (new)weighted, pad football players ONLY. You will be required to bring your football player along with his/her original birth certificate to a location where Bert Bell Officials will take the player's picture and create a Bert Bell ID for him/her. This verifies that your child is the proper age for the division in which they are playing. You need only present the certificate, they do not take or keep it. This ID is good for three years. It will need to be renewed if your child continues to play in the league. The coaches and this website will inform you of the locations and dates as soon as they are set by the League.
Is football safe for my child?
At HYF, your child's safety is of paramount concern. We strive to make our football environment as safe as possible by supplying the players with safety compliant equipment and the coaches with the best training possible. The coaches realize that these are children and treat them with a firm, but compassionate and responsible attitude. Coaches will ensure that the players are properly equipped and constantly hydrated. HYF, in compliance with the Bert Bell Organization, requires that all players have a doctors approval to play football. The Doctor’s note minimizes the risk of any existing medical preconditions. The Physical Form is located in the Documents/Forms link to the left. You may use this form or hand in a standard form from your Doctor. As a parent, we ask that you make sure that your child always wears equipment properly at practice and games. We want the players and parents to enjoy this great game without fear of injury.
What is expected of me as a parent?
HYF is an ALL volunteer organization. Parents serve in many ways including coaching, HYF&C Board member, Snack Bar management, Team Moms, etc. A $20 snack shack fee is required from each family and will be collected at equipment hand out. We are always looking for good people to help in all aspects of our program. Please contact a Board member if you are willing to help in ANY way. THANKS!
